When we say Out of This World, we mean it—this remarkable collection spans the vastness of the cosmos to the tiniest wonders of the microscopic world. The late Donald McCray was a man of endless curiosity and craftsmanship, and his passions shine through in this fascinating, wide-ranging assortment.

There is an impressive selection of high-end telescopes and precision accessories, perfect for the dedicated stargazer. Shifting focus to a smaller scale, the collection also features fine microscopes, including exquisite antique brass instruments by renowned London makers such as J. Swift & Sons.

Mr. McCray’s fascination with natural history is evident in his extensive fossil collection—featuring orthoceras plates, ammonite shells, fish fossil slabs, and even massive megalodon teeth that testify to the ancient mysteries of our planet.

Art lovers will discover treasures as well, including original works by Botetourt County artist Mark R. Woodie and a handcrafted dulcimer—a one-of-a-kind creation by the celebrated Appalachian fiddle artist Audrey Hash Ham.

Mr. McCray’s creativity didn’t stop there. His woodshop tools, art supplies, easels, and airbrush compressors reveal a man equally inspired by craftsmanship and design.

And then there are the vehicles! This collection includes a beautifully maintained 1930 Ford Model A Pickup, a hard-top Mercedes convertible, and a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy.

This is truly a collection that reflects a life lived with passion, curiosity, and craftsmanship. Happy Bidding!

*Please note, the resident of this home was a smoker and the house exhibits an obvious smoke smell. There is the chance that items with fabric (rugs, furniture) may be compromised with a smoke odor.

It is rare to come across a collection of this quality and magnitude coupled with all the other fabulous contents of the home. It is obvious where to begin to talk about these wonderful items. For this collection Farmer Auctions brought in our good friend and doll Expert Brigid Jones (soon to be seen on Antiques Roadshow) to consult. Notable doll makers that are featured in this collection are Armand Marseille, Kestner,  Kammer & Reinhardt, Simon & Halbig and more. You will see a variety of body types such as composition and jointed kidskin. The dolls rage in sizes from a few inches tall to a few feet. Some of them walk & talk and all of them stole our hearts. They are ready for their new homes and to see where the auction takes them.
