The Johnson family owned Oak Knoll in Danvers Massachusetts and cared for the poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier from 1876 until til his death in 1892. A cane presented to Whittier is included in this auction as well as a very impressive Gorham sterling tureen that was from Oak Knoll. Mary Ann Johnson married Joseph U McClench and many more lots in this sale descended through these two families including the Whittier items as well as family silver, Civil War swords, the naval sword and nautical instruments of Donald McClench who served in WWI and WWII as well as teaching navigation at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis as well as items he brought home from is travels.
